Short answer

A WooCommerce audit combines a WordPress audit with store-specific checks. Look at how shop filters, sorting and product attribute URLs are crawled, how out-of-stock products are handled, whether cart, checkout and account pages are kept out of search, whether product structured data is output once and correctly, and how much the store's extensions slow down product and category pages.

Platform details reviewed October 30, 2026. WooCommerce changes its settings and menus regularly, so confirm specifics in its current documentation before acting.

What's different about SEO on WooCommerce

  • WooCommerce runs inside WordPress, so every WordPress issue, from search visibility settings to plugin conflicts, applies to the store too.
  • Shop filters and sorting add query parameters that can multiply category URLs into thousands of near-duplicates.
  • Store behaviour depends heavily on extensions for filters, subscriptions or bundles, each adding its own pages and scripts.
  • WooCommerce outputs product structured data itself, and SEO plugins may add their own, which can lead to duplicates.

The WooCommerce audit checklist

Catalogue and filters

  • Filter and sort parameters on shop and category pages aren't creating indexable duplicates.
  • Product category pages carry useful introductory content, not only a product grid.
  • Product tag archives are either useful or kept out of the index.

Products

  • Each product has unique titles and descriptions, not manufacturer copy reused across many stores.
  • Out-of-stock handling follows a deliberate rule, using the inventory setting to hide items only where that's intended.
  • Product structured data appears once, with price and availability matching the page.

Store system pages

  • Cart, checkout and my-account pages are excluded from search and from the sitemap.
  • Order confirmation and account URLs never appear in search results.
  • The shop base and product permalink structure is settled, with redirects for any past changes.

Performance

  • Cart fragment and extension scripts don't load on pages that don't need them.
  • Product images are generated at sensible sizes for the theme.
  • Hosting and caching handle the store without caching personalised cart content.

Common WooCommerce problems and fixes

Filter URLs flooding the index

Why it matters
Combinations of colour, size and sorting parameters produce thousands of thin category variants that compete with the main category.
Fix
Keep filtered views out of the index with canonicals or noindex as appropriate, and link internally to the clean category URLs.

Duplicate product structured data

Why it matters
WooCommerce and an SEO plugin each print Product markup, sometimes with different prices.
Fix
Choose one source of product markup, disable the other, and validate a sample of products.

Manufacturer descriptions on every product

Why it matters
The same supplier text appears on many other stores, giving search engines little reason to choose this one.
Fix
Rewrite descriptions for the best-selling products first, adding real usage details and specifications.

An audit is diagnosis. Implementation is a separate decision.

Launch-day checks for WooCommerce

  1. WordPress search visibility setting checked on the live store.
  2. Cart, checkout and account pages excluded from the sitemap.
  3. Redirects in place for any product or category URLs that changed.
  4. Product structured data validated on several product types.

Frequently asked questions

Should WooCommerce product tag pages be indexed?
Usually not, unless tags form genuinely useful collections with content. Product categories normally do that job better.
Is WooCommerce slower than hosted platforms?
It depends on hosting, theme and extensions. A lean WooCommerce store on good hosting can be fast; a store with dozens of extensions on shared hosting rarely is.
