Short answer

A Shopify SEO audit centres on how the platform builds URLs. Products are reachable under /products/ and also under collection paths, variants add parameters, and filters and tags create extra collection URLs. Check that canonicals and internal links point to the main product URLs, that filter and tag pages aren't flooding the index, that robots.txt (editable through robots.txt.liquid) is deliberate, and that app scripts aren't slowing the theme.

Platform details reviewed October 30, 2026. Shopify changes its settings and menus regularly, so confirm specifics in its current documentation before acting.

What's different about SEO on Shopify

  • URL prefixes such as /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ are fixed by the platform and can't be removed.
  • Products can be reached through collection-aware paths as well as their main /products/ URL, with canonicals pointing to the main one.
  • Apps inject scripts into the storefront, and code can linger in the theme after an app is uninstalled.
  • The sitemap is generated automatically and split into child sitemaps for products, collections, pages and blogs.

The Shopify audit checklist

Products and variants

  • Product canonicals point to the /products/ URL, not collection-aware paths.
  • Theme templates link to products using the main URL where possible, to avoid crawling duplicates.
  • Variant URLs with ?variant= parameters canonicalise to the main product.
  • Out-of-stock and discontinued products follow a consistent keep, redirect or remove rule.

Collections, filters and tags

  • Storefront filter and sort parameters aren't creating indexable near-duplicates.
  • Tag-filtered collection URLs are deliberately indexed or excluded.
  • Collection pages have useful copy, not just a product grid.

Crawl controls

  • Any robots.txt.liquid customisation is intentional and documented.
  • The storefront password page was removed at launch, so the store is crawlable.
  • The submitted sitemap is the store's own /sitemap.xml on the primary domain.

Performance and apps

  • Each installed app is still needed; leftover code from removed apps is cleaned from the theme.
  • Hero images and product media are sized appropriately for mobile.
  • Third-party review, chat and upsell widgets don't block the main content from rendering.

Common Shopify problems and fixes

Internal links to collection-aware product URLs

Why it matters
Many themes link to products inside collection paths, so crawlers find many duplicates even though canonicals point elsewhere.
Fix
Adjust theme templates to link to the main /products/ URL where the theme allows it.

Indexable filter and tag combinations

Why it matters
Combinations of filters and tags multiply collection URLs, wasting crawl attention on thin variations.
Fix
Decide which filtered views deserve indexing and keep the rest out, using canonicals, noindex or robots rules as appropriate.

Slow theme after years of apps

Why it matters
Uninstalled apps can leave scripts and snippets in the theme that still load on every page.
Fix
Audit theme files for leftover app code and remove it, testing on a duplicate theme first.

An audit is diagnosis. Implementation is a separate decision.

Launch-day checks for Shopify

  1. Storefront password removed and the primary domain set.
  2. URL redirects created for every old product and page URL from the previous platform.
  3. Sitemap submitted in Search Console for the primary domain.
  4. Product structured data checked on a sample of products.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change Shopify's /products/ and /collections/ URL structure?
No, those prefixes are fixed by the platform. Focus on clean handles after the prefix and on consistent internal links and canonicals instead.
Can Shopify's robots.txt be edited?
Yes, through a robots.txt.liquid template in the theme. Edit it cautiously; blocking the wrong paths can hide products from search.
